The Sisterhood

Ohev Sholom Synagogue encourages an active Sisterhood. Read below for more information on the Sisterhood's activities.

Hadassah

President: Judy Kaplan

Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization, meets monthly at the synagogue.

Jean Staiman chairs the Hadassah Donor on Sunday, November 5 at 1:00pm. Dr. Michael Roskin of the Political Science Department at Lycoming College will review The Bomb in the Basement: How Israel West Nuclear and What That Means for the World. Dr. Roskin was Visiting Professor of Foreign Policy in the Department of National Security and Strategy at the U.S. Army War College, 1991-94. He has been a Professor of Political Science at Lycoming College since 1972 and has authored five best-selling political science textbooks. Professor Roskin earlier worked as a newsman and foreign service officer for the U.S. Information Agency before earning a Ph.D. in international studies at American University.

The theme of other meetings this year is the life and legacy of Golda Meir. The November 20th meeting presents Ethel Drier in the concluding scenes of Golda's Balcony.

Mens Club

President: Stan Gould

The Mens Club meets once a month on Sundays for Minyan and lunch.  The club is involved in virtually every facet of Synagogue life, as well as community life.  The Mens Club sponsored the first debate between judicial candidates and will be sponsoring a debate between the candidates for mayor.  The club sponsors the following activities:
  • basketball at the Synagogue on Mondays and Wednesdays, 7:00-9:00 p.m. every week except holidays. 
  • softball game and cookout for the congregation in the summer 
  • money contributions to the Synagogue for expenses
  • care of miscellaneous items, such as the loudspeaker system
  • affiliation with the United Federation of Jewish Mens Clubs, a national organization sponsored by the United Synagogue of America. 
  • involvement in distributing the yellow Yom Hashoah candles
  • involvement in educational and teen activities
  • discouraging the missionizing of the Jewish community
  • providing educational outreach
